Gulmarg is a mountain shelf which seats with great pride at the height of 4,124m. It enjoys being 5 km spread of Mount Apharwat. From here, Gulmarg shows you an over valley wonderful picture of Kashmir valley. It also gives good glimpses of Nanga Parbat and other distant peaks. Gulmarg is one of the best skiing spots for the intermediate skiers. Gulmarg lies in the western extremity of Pir Panjal. Pir Panjal is one of the six ranges that together bring the glory of great heights to the Himalayas. Gulmarg is one of the places that receive some of the heaviest snowfalls in India because pf its geographical location. In the lap of the Himalayas, Gulmarg is renowned to be the best skiing resorts. This resort was established in the year 1927 by two British Army Officers. They set up the first skiing club in Gulmarg. Skiing races are organized here during the festive seasons of Christmas and Easter. Skiing In Gulmarg is sheer fun and great pleasure.

Facilities for Skiing in Gulmarg

Facilities for Skiing in Gulmarg are Ski lift, Gondola lift, Chair lift, Sledges and Snow cycles, ski equipments available, toboggans, ski instructors and the like. The valley of Gulmarg is 3.5 km long and about 1 km wide. It is spread in an area of about 3-sq-kms. It stands at an altitude of 2,650 m. Gulmarg is known as Kashmir's leading upland hill resort. The tender surging meadows of Gulmarg are tucked in a thick layer of snow. The resort has a T-bar lift, three ultra modern ski-lifts and a chair-lift. There are facilities of short ski courses for beginners and advanced skiers which are provided by ski school, Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering. Gulmarg is considered to be the cheapest spot in the world to be trained in skiing. Slopes of Gulmarg are the natural ones. Among the numerous slopes, a few moderate ones run ranging from 200 m to 3kms which are good for beginners. Skiers reach up to the top of the ski slopes by Ski lifts and chair lifts, from where they can choose the slopes for beginners, intermediate or more advanced ones.

The best and longest skiing in Gulmarg is accessed by the Gondola Cable Car Lift, which allows a ski run of 2,213 m. This gondola was designed by Poma of France. It extends almost to Apharwat's peak, at an elevation of 3980 m above sea level. It provides lift access to 1330 vertical of vast snow riding terrain. The setting-up of Gondola Cable Car Lift from Gulmarg to Apharwat top makes Gulmarg one of the highest lift-served ski resorts in the world.

The gondola terrain is divided into two sections, i.e. an upper and a lower section. The first section is 2,350 m long and rises 450 m vertically from Gulmarg ski resort to slopes at 3300m up the side of Apharwat Mountain.
