Kufri is located 19 Km from Shimla. This tiny hill station is famous for its trekking and hiking trails. It is an ideal place for adventure seeking travelers as here they can enjoy skiing along with snow covered slopes in winters. In summers travelers can enjoy the panoramic sights of the surrounding verdant valley and snow capped peaks. The other major attraction of Kufri is the Himalayan Nature Park, which has a collection of animal and birds found only in Himachal Pradesh. This park is located amidst 90 hectares of temperature vegetation that forms natural habitat for many wild animals and birds of the western Himalaya.

The Himalayan national park is a unique zoo that has attracted tourists ever since it was established. The common animals at this park include Barking Deer, Musk Deer, Brown Bear, Hangal and rare species of Monal. The main vegetation of this park includes Fir- Spruce and oak formations with scattered presence of Deodar - Blue Pine - Holly clusters. This region remains under snow for about three months from late December to March. The spring signs the sprouting of various herbaceous species such as ground orchids, Primulas, Potentillas, Geraniums and Balsams that keep on to bloom in succession till September making the park look magnificent . This adds colors to the verdant surroundings of the national park. Foothpaths in the Himalaya nature park help the visitor to understand nature in its most composed self. Inside the nature park you can also enjoy a breathtaking view of the whole range of Himalayas snow clad peaks on a clear day.

History of Himalayan Nature Park:

Earlier, the present area of the nature park was used to be the Musk deer farm. During 1996, it was was recognized as Himalayan Nature Park Kufri by the Central zoo Authority of India. Here the animals are provided with high quality feed in order to meet nutritional health requirements of the animals. the zoo management focuses on the environment enrichment, high health and hygiene regime, veterinary care, better animal record keeping.

The natural habitat of the Himalayan nature park houses selected Himalayan animal species for the intention of increasing the knowledge of visitors. However, the animal enclosures of the national park are large in size and can easily house wild animals. The animals of this park are provided with opportunity to relax after morning meal behind shrub or a large boulder or even to hibernate during winter. Some of the attractive animals in the Himalayan nature park are Bharal, Mush Deer, Black Bear, Leopard Cat, Tibetan Wolf, Sambhar Ghoral, Monal, Barking Deer, Cheer pheasant and White crested Kaleej.
