Dharamshala

Dharamshala is a famous hill station that is lying on the spur of the Dhauladhar range about 17 kms north- east of Kangra town. It is commonly known as the queen of the hills and is divided into upper and lower sections due to its immense height difference. The two sections are divided by a 3 km distance. Dharamshala is popular for its scenic beauty, calmness, serenity, high pine trees, tea gardens and timber yielding trees. This hill station is wooded with oak and conifer trees and snow capped mountains surrounds three sides of the town while the valley stretches in front. History of Dharamshala:

Dharamshala's history has been influenced significantly by both Hinduism and Buddhism. In 8th century, several monasteries were built by the Tibetan immigrants who settled here. The Hindu residents of Dharamshala are the Gaddis who worship Shiva and Durga. Dharamshala was developed as an army subsidiary cantonment for troops stationed at Kangra in 1849. It adopted its name from an old Hindu sanctuary, called Dharamshala. It later became the official capital of Kangra in 1852. Dharamshala suffered a serious setback and the loss of many lives with the earthquake 1905. In 1959, his holiness, the Dali Lama, came to Mcleodganj in Dharamshala as he had to run away from Tibet. The prime minister of India permitted Dalai Lama and his followers to settle here. Nowadays, Dharamshala is the seat of his Holiness, the Dalai Lama.
