It is situated at an altitude of 1600 m above sea level in Dharamshala. The church is ideally situated in the majestic 'Deodar' forest.

History of St.John's Church:

The imposing structure was built in 1852 and stands as a memorial of the British viceroy, Lord Elgin, who died in Dharamshala in 1863. It is enclosed with the dense Deodhar forest. The church has an old bell, which hangs down form a 300 m high tower. This church was reconstructed in 1929 and has several memorial tablets. Now the church has lovely spotted glass windows and there is a Christian cemetery around it. The windows of church add to the beauty of it. The glasses are covered with a fine mosaic of patterns which are eye pleasing.
