When going deep into the legends of the city Kanyakumari, revelation was made about an avatar or incarnation of the Indian deity Parvathi. This avatar of goddess Parvathi was known as Kanya Devi who was supposed to marry Lord Shiva. Unfortunately he did not turn up on the day and event of marriage because of which no marriage took place. Legends also say that the cereals and especially rice remained uncooked when preparations were being made for the after marriage feast. Till date, when people visit the city of Kanyakumari they come across stones very much identical to uncooked cereals and rice which is believed to be legendary marriages leftovers. Later on, Kanya Devi the incarnation of goddess Parvathi was blessed and was known all over as the virgin goddess, 'Kanyakumari'.

With a beautifully adorned entrance at the Northern Gate, the facing of the temple is positioned to be on the eastern side. There are three corridors in the temple which are beautifully ornamented.

The best time one can visit the temple of Kanyakumari is somewhere between the months of May and June when the festival of Vaikasi is held or on the time of Navarathri which falls somewhere between the months of September and October. There is special instruction for male worshippers that is to removing their shirts prior to stepping in the temple. In all this is a place which provides the tourists with ultimate holistic pleasures which are beyond any enjoyment or marry making that the city encourages.
