Alwar is a prominent tourist place in Rajasthan. The city has a beautiful fort, the Bala Quila or the Alwar fort. It is situated high up on the 300 m steep cliff. History of Alwar Fort

Alwar Fort has been built during the sixteenth century. In 1775, it was taken over by Rana Pratap Singh wherein till date; there is difference in opinions amongst historians about the exact manner in which it was conquered. The first Mughal king Babur has spent a night in this fort. He took away the treasure from here to gift it to his son, Humayun. Jahangir is also said to have stayed here when he was in exile. The place where he stayed is called as Salim mahal.

Structure of Alwar Fort

The walls of this fort are about 5 kms long from north and south and 1.6 kms from east and west. The Alwar fort stands about 1000 feet above the city of Alwar towering it. The name Bala Quila means young fort. There is amazing fortification surrounding the Nikumbha mahal palace, which has graceful Bengal canned marble columns. The balconies of this palace are delicately latticed. The fort has 15 large and 51 small towers and has 446 loopholes for musketry. There are eight towers to defend it. The most significant are the 3599 kanguras and each of them contains two loopholes for musketry.

You can enter the fort from six gates. They are called as Jai pol, Suraj pol, Laxman pol, chand pol, Krishna pol and the Andheri pol. There are other structures like the jal mahal, Salim sagar, Suraj kund and Nikumbha mahal. There are about 15 temples in the fort belonging to various deities. The most impressive aspect of the fort is the spectacular view of the city and the beautiful countryside below.

Since this fort contains a radio transmitter station, you can visit it only with special permission. For this, you will have to meet the superintendent of police Alwar. The fort is accessible by four-wheeler or by a steep footpath. The major tourist attractions of the Bala Quila are the Top wale Hanumanji temple, Chakradhari Hanumanji temple, Sita Ram temple and the army area.
