Amarnath is situated in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India on the mountain called Amarnath. Once the river originates from the glacier of Amarnath, it moves towards the direction of Lidder valley and then disappears underground to resurface at Baltal. The river later joins the Chenab at Sonmarg in Kashmir.

According to the general belief, there is a lake on top of the caves named as Ramkund Lake and the water from this lake drip continuously to form the Shiva Lingam which attains a full shape on a full moon night.
