History of Keoladeo Ghana National park

The name is derived from the ancient Hindu temple Keoladeo devoted to lord Shiva. Ghana is derived from Hindi which literally means Dense. Prince Bhamaji of Morvi in Gujrat converted this area into a world famous wildlife reserve. Every year Duck shoots were organized here in honor of Viceroy Curzon since 1902. There is a stone plaque engraved with exploits of all visiting dignitaries since then. It was declared as a Bird Sanctuary after independence and the rulers of Bharatpur continued to enjoy their shooting rights until 1972. The Keoladeo Ghana bird sanctuary was given the status of Keoladeo Ghana National Park in 1981. Today it is one of the best water birds preserves in the world and is a World Heritage site.

Keoladeo Ghana National Park is situated on the border between the states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The area of this park is 232sq.km and consists of marshy areas, Kadam forests, grasslands and shallow lakes. You need to get permission from the Warden or Ranger to enter the park.

How to reach Keoladeo Ghana National Park

Keoladeo Ghana National Park is situated just 2 km away from Bharatpur. You can reach Bharatpur by train or road. Delhi is 176 km from Bharatpur and Agra is 50 kms away. There are regular buses from Delhi, Agra, and other cities to Bharatpur. you can even hire a taxi for your trip and can use it inside the park as well for your wildlife safari. Min buses are operated by forest department for sight seeing. You can hire cycles at the entrance of the park if you decide to pedal leisurely through the sanctuary.
