Chennai is located on the Coromandal coast of the Bay of Bengal. Due to its coastal location, Chennai is graced by a number of beautiful beaches. The beaches of Chennai are popular all over the world. Tourists come to Chennai from all over the place just to enjoy sun, sand, and water.

The beaches of Chennai are set against a natural background. Green grooves surround the sea coast. The beaches of Chennai share the same boundary with the Bay of Bengal. National and international tourists flock the beaches of Chennai for different purposes. Marina Beach:

Marina is the second largest beach of the world. It is 4.5 kms long and has a wide foreshore. The blue water and awesome surfs attract a large number of tourists to this beach. To add to the aesthetics of the beach a number of beautiful statues have been made there. Some are statues of national leaders while others are the samadhis of great Tamil leaders.

When you are on Marina beach, enjoy regional snacks like "murruku" and "sundal". Tourists are entertained by regional activities like puppet show, astrology, and so on.

Near the Marina beach, there is an aquarium which has a nice collection of fish and sea animals.

Eliot Beach:

Eliot beach lies in Basant Nagar area of Chennai. The beach is down South of the Marina beach. Eliot beach is popular as the "night beach of Chennai". The beach is mainly frequented by youths and thus it is known as the "night beach".

It is a good idea to choose Eliot beach for sun bathing because it is less crowded and a cleaner beach.

Covelong Beach:

Covelong beach is located 40 kms from Chennai on Mahabalipuram road. The beach has a fort built by the Nawab of Carnatic. Later it became the main hub of French in India. At present Taj group runs a luxurious resort here. The Fisherman's Cove Resort is a favorite destination for tourists looking for luxurious and world class beach resorts.

The beach is far from Chennai and is separated by a canal. However, the beach is clean, less crowded, and suitable for water sports lovers.

Marina, Eliot, and Covelong are the three main beaches of Chennai where most of the activities are centered.
