Literally, Chidambaram means the sky that is permeated through the atmosphere of intelligence and Wisdom. According to the Legends, earlier the city was surrounded by the forest of Tillai. The forest had the species of Mangrove trees. However, there was a small shrine on the banks of Sivaganga Tank. Saints Patanjali and Vyagrapada are believed to have worshipped this shrine, which is now called as Thirumoolanathar. The town of Chidambaram is located at the east central part of Tamil Nadu state. Chidambaram is near about 58 kms from the Pondicherry. It is an important pilgrimage center for Shaivites.

How to Reach Chidambaram

Chidambaram city is well known for its famous Nataraj temple. The Nataraj temple was built in the reign of Vira Chola Raja. The complex of Nataraj temple covers an area of near about 40 acres. This temple is one of the major architectural highlights of the Tamil Nadu state. The Nataraj temple has four gopurams, which are directed towards north, and south. This tower is of approximately 45 m high. Two of the gopurams are covered with classical postures of Lord Shiva - Nataraj. The other main features of temple are the 1000 pillar hall, and the Nritta Sabha court. The other temple i.e. Thillai Kaliamman Temple was also constructed by Cholas. Thillai Kaliamman Temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. However, it is believed that without visiting this both temple, pilgrimage to Chidambaram is incomplete. Chidambaram also has an Annamalai University located here. Tourist excursions at Chidambaram are Pichavaram, Neyveli, Kalvarayan Hills, Tarangambadi and many more.

How to reach Chidambaram :

Chidambaram is near about 245 kms from Chennai. However, Chidambaram is city, which is well connected with all the means of transport network. Moreover, it is very well linked to the several towns of the Tamil Nadu state as well. One can avail all the modes of transport, which includes Airways, Roadways, or the Roadways.

By Airways to Chidambaram :

The nearest airport to the Chidambaram is Tiruchirapalli. It is located near about 195 kms away. However, the other airport located at Chennai, which is near about 245 kms away form Chidambaram. From the Tiruchirapalli, one can take the Indian Airlines flight to reach Chennai. However, Chennai is very well connected to all the major cities in India as well as abroad.

By Railways to Chidambaram :

Chidambaram has its own railway head too. The railway head lies on the Chennai Trichy meter gauge line. The Chidambaram railways stations are very well connected to most of the cities of the southern India. Many passengers or the tourist people take a halt at the Chidambaram station. The main cities to which Chidambaram is connected includes Tiruchirapalli, Madhurai, Rameshwaram, Bangalore, Tirupati, and Chennai.
