Tucking in the lofty peaks of the lovely Western Ghats, The Project Tiger Reserve cum The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is an important tourist destination of Chikmagalur which attracts a large number of tourists every year. The name of this wildlife sanctuary is such as it is based upon the presence of river Bhadra, this river is seen to be meandering though the dense plantations of the city. The government of Mysore named this destination as Jagara Valley Game Reserve in the year 1951. Later on in the year 1974, a census of animal species was conducted. This area as well as the adjoining places became a part of the survey and from then onwards its name was reconstructed as Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. The substantial population of tigers within the reserve is what this wildlife sanctuary boasted of and so in the year 1998, it was declared as the 25th Project Tiger Reserve. The people of the region also recognize it by the name of Muthodi Wildlife Sanctuary.

Flora attractions of the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary: The flora belt of the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is commendably striking. It has large fields of lush green vegetations. Basically the vegetation of the region is moist. Dry deciduous forests are also seen in this region. One will find nothing less than 120 species of trees here. The vegetation of the region mainly consists of Mathi, Teak, Nandi, Tadasalu, Rosewood, Kindal, Nandi, etc.
