Sringeri Mutt is also known by the name of Sringeri Sharda Peetham. Shardamba Temple is the place where Sharda Devi is prayed as the chief deity. Sharda Devi is known as an incarnation of the Goddess Saraswati. Here, the deity is seen seated on The Chakra Peetham with a parrot on her hand. This parrot is also considered sacred. The Deity is also seen holding a pious Jap Mala. An image of original sandalwood was supposed to installed here by Adi Shankaracharya but later somewhere around the 14th century, a golden image replaced it. The temple is also abodes a Sphatika Linga which Shankaracharya was blessed with by Lord Shiva when he was in the Himalayas. Till date, the in charge of this mutt is in charge of the Yajur Vedas. The one who becomes the head of this mutt is given the name of Jagadguru which mean a teacher to the world. The Jagadguru is also supposed to carry Shankracharya's name as the title.
