Sim's Park is a popular tourist place in Coonoor. It is situated in the deep ravines near the Coonoor railway station. The park has beautifully winding footpaths and the botanical garden has a variety of plants. There are about more than 1000 species of plants n the park. The place has trees that bloom in different seasons and hence is visited by tourists all the year round. Pasture institute is situated just opposite to the Park and does research on Rabbies and polio vaccines.
Laws falls is a beautiful picnic spot near the Coonoor Mettupalayam road. There are undisturbed shoals here and the falls are about 180 feet in height. Lady Canning's seat is a small house which commands panoramic views of the tea estates and the plains. Lambs rock is is a favorite tourist place in Coonoor. It also has excellent views of the area. Dolphin's Nose, Droog, etc are other tourist places in Coonoor.
Coonoor is used as a backdrop for several Indian and foreign movies. Most notable one is the one in the movie A Passage to India by David Lean in 1984.
By Air:
The nearest airport to Coonoor is the Coimbatore airport. There are direct flights to Coonoor from various places in the country. There are also some international flights to and fro from Coimbatore from places like Colombo, Singapore, etc.
By Train:
The nearest railway station to Coonoor is the Mettupalayam railway station. The biggest railway station near Coonoor is the Coimbatore railway station. Coimbatore railway station is well connected to all other important railway stations in th country. The Nilgiri toy train connects Ooty to Mettupalayam and Coonoor is one of the stations on the way. It is regarded as an engineering marvel and declared as a world heritage place by UNESCO. The train is charming with blue and cream wooden coaches with large windows and th engines are steam engines designed by Swiss Locomotive Works. The train passes through extensive rice fields and through an impressive21 kms of rocky terrain. There are about 26 track passes via ducts and 13 tunnels with a number of twists and bends. Fern Hill is the highest point in the rail journey and you can see beautiful tea plantations along the track. The ride in the toy train is excellent and there are beautiful views on the ride.
By road:
Coonoor is linked to Mettupalayam by road. Mettupalayamis the nearest major bus station near Coonoor. The Nilgiri Ghat roads are the main access to the entire district and continue till Ooty. Another major road link to Coonoor is the Kotagiri via Bandishola and Bettati Toll gate. This road links to the state highway no 15 that is from Kotagiri to Ooty. There are a number of other minor roads that pass from the outlying tea estates to Coonoor bus station.
Ooty is a place near to Coonoor and the nearest getaway. It is well connected to places in the state. There are regular buses to and from Bangalore, Mysore, Calicut, Tirupati, etc. There are regular state travel buses coming to Coonoor from various places in the state. There are also private deluxe buses to Coonoor and you can enjoy the ride. The best time to visit Coonoor is summer as it is a pleasant and cool at that time of the year.
