Sankardev Kalakshetra is divided into several complexes. The Central Museum exhibits the articles used by the tribal people of Assam state. The museum also has several cultural objects of the country. The open-air theater can accommodate 2000 people and hosts cultural programs in its premises. Traditional dance and drama performances are conducted in this theater. Kalakshetra also has the Artists' Village, which replicates the village society of Assam. The Sahitya Bhavan is the library in the Kalakshetra, which has a huge collection of rare books and manuscripts.

Collection of archaeological and ethnographic items of entire northeast India reflects the most beautiful culture of India. The collection in the museum includes sculpture, paintings, metal, ivory, woodwork, costumes, manuscripts, and other books.

Tribal artifacts and some of the available Assamese tribal village materials provide insight into the everyday life of these tribal people.

What does it signify?

Sankardev Kalakshetra, an organization that has been mainly emphasizing to promote the culture of Assam as well as other northeastern regions of India. It includes mainly the culture of the population of northeastern India, which can be categorized in the following way:

A) Tribal communities living in the rather distant hills and detached from the impact of 'Sanskritic' or other 'organized' cultures (except in the case of tribes with Buddhistic connection).

B)Tribal communities living in the hills and the plains but who have been acculturated in various degrees in close contact with the 'non-tribal' Sanskritized majority or sometime through the impact of Buddhism or Christianity.

C) More or less fully Sankritized societies, where the population is almost wholly (in case of Meities) or substantially (in case of Assamese) made up Indo-Mongoloid stocks. Local Muslims can also be taken as a part of this milieu

It mainly signifies the arts & crafts in the north-eastern region - be it in colour scheme, decorative design or workmanship - it is that of textiles. Also, nowhere else is weaving so replete with artistic sensibility and so intimately connected with folk life. The people of Assam quote with visible pride the memorable words in which Mahatma Gandhi had praised the weaving skill of the women of Assam.

Being in the heart of Guwahati, it is easily connected by air, road or rail and river. It provides all the facilities of public transportation facilities and taxi services.
