The structure is well built and is regarded as one of the safest forts in India. Architects say the fort was so well constructed that it was virtually unconquerable. The fort was so famous in medieval India, that its beauty became the subject of many poetic works. Babur, the founder of the great Mughal dynasty once remarked it to be 'the pearl' among the all the fortresses in India.
Being situated at a very prominent location, the fort was always under the attack of enemies. It is the witness of many bloody battles where thousands of soldiers lost their lives. After the Tomers the fort was transferred under the control of the Mughals, Marathas and then the British. The fort was also the battle front of the very first war of independence during 1858. The martyrs like Rani Laxmi Bai, Tantia Tope lost their lives here while fighting against the British. The British later on handed over the fort to the Scindias.

- The fort houses some beautiful palaces and temples of stunning design.
- Teli Ka Mandir is one pf the tree famous temples bordered by the fort wall. This temple is built in the 9 century and is dedicated to lord Vishnu. It is also the highest building in the fort with the height of 100th feet. The temple displays a combination of two arts, the Dravidian style as well as the indo Aryan style.
- The other two temples are the Chaturbhuj Temple and the Saas Bahu Ka Mandir.
- Among the palaces in the fort, the Karan Palace, Gujari Mahal and Jehangir Mahal are the notable ones. But the most beautiful of all is the Man Singh Palace. The walls and floors of the palace are decorated with brilliant and bright colours.
- The other notable features in the fort are some very ancient water storage tanks.
- This rock cut fort is build on a sand stone precipice and measures about 2.8 kms in length, 200 to 800 m in width and 91 meters above the plains.

The fort can be easily commuted and is open for visitors from 9.30 AM to 5 PM. A visit to the fort during the winters is extremely pleasant and enjoying.
