The district is famous for its habitat of variety of species and the lush green environment is also of tourist interest. Famous for its tourist destinations, this district also comprises a number of hill stations which makes it the perfect tourist spot.
A new national park has been declared by the government of Kerala in this region. The proposed name of the national park is Pampadum Shola National Park. It was on November 20th, previous year that the state government notification declared Mathikettan Shola region as a National Park.
There was big media hype on these Shola forests in the recent past. There had been reports that the organized groups of dealers were grabbing the government land. This was being done in active participation with a number of revenue officials of the local area.
The government issued an official press release in which Mathikettan Shola region was considered to be protected by the biodiversity and the wildlife of the state. Alongwith this national park, few other drafts of notifications were issued which included Mannavan Shola, Pullardi Shola and Idivara Shola. All these national parks will be situated in the same Idukki district and will have the status of full fledged national parks.
The area which has been notified as the national park extends upto 1282 hectares. The proposed regions will comprise of the village of Pooppara in the Idukki district. Situated in Kerala, the Pampadum Shola National Park falls north of another newly established sanctuary of the state, Kurinjimala sanctuary. The sanctuary is also much close to a proposed national park called Palani Hills. There are a number of other wildlife sanctuaries and national parks which are situated in the vicinity of this new Pampadum Shola National Park. Some other national parks are Eravikulam National Park, Anamudi Shola National Park, Chinnar wildlife sanctuary, Manjapatti valley and Indira Gandhi wildlife sanctuary.
The district of Idukki has undoubtedly become the green district of India and will appear in the list of some of the most environmental friendly regions of the country. With three new proposed sanctuaries in the region, the state government is wholeheartedly trying to transfer the funds to maintain the habitat for the wild lives. It is pertinent that the government will undoubtedly put in efforts to establish some tourist spots in the sanctuary and some adventurous sports will also be planned to organize. The sanctuary is in the process of its completion and the government is putting a step forward to make the sanctuary accessible.
