History of Imphal :

The history of Imphal is as fascinating as its beauty. The remnants of the old place of Kangla are at the core of the town. The ruins are surrounded by a moat as well. Assam Rifles-a paramilitary force used to reside in the Kangla Fort. In the year 2004, the Prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh handed this Fort to the state of Manipur. The Polo ground in Imphal is the oldest Polo ground on the planet that has survived through the course of time. The Manipur State Museum is very close to the Polo Ground. The museum has a collection of old artifacts and pictures depicting the history of Manipur. Imphal has the only market on the globe where only women run the stalls. The market is named as 'Ima Keithel'. This unique market is in Khwairamband Bazaar. The battle of Imphal with the battle of Kohima was the turning point in the Burma Campaign in the year 1944 during the Second World War.

The district of Imphal was split into Imphal East and Imphal west on the historic date of June 18, 1997. A large scale terror attack struck Imphal on October 21, 2008 but could not disturb its elegance and novelty.
