Moirang enjoys a prime in Bishnupur District at a distance of about 45 Kms from Imphal on Tiddim Road in the north-eastern state of Manipur.

Historical Importance of Moirang

Moirang served as the headquarters of Azad Hind Fauj during the time of Second World War. It was here where; for the very first time, the flag of the Indian National Army was hoisted in India on April 14, 1944. An I.N.A Museum is here which exhibits photographs, letters, badges of ranks and other articles that are associated with I.N.A. The lawn of this Museum holds with pride, a bronze statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in uniform.

Archaeological importance of Moirang

The town of Moirang is popular because an ancient temple of Lord Thangjing, a pre-Hindu deity is present here. A village named-Ngangkhaleikai is here which has preserved the old cloth used by Khamba and Nongban. This village holds great importance in Moirang.

Famous festival at Moirang

The festival of Moirang is 'Lai Haroba' which is celebrated in the month of May every year. During the celebration of this festival numerous people throng here from the state in order to get blessings of Ebudhou Thangjing. Men and women dress up in dazzling traditional costumes and sing and dance in the honor of the deity of the temple. Several amaiba and amaibi along with the local people worship and offer gifts to Ebudhou Thangjing. Every Sunday, during this festival is celebrated a mega program of dance and song is offered to Ebudhou Thangjing. This festival is celebrated for about a month. On the second day from the concluding day, 'Mukna Lamiel' occurs. On this day, a traditional Mukna follows a half marathon. Everyone participating in it is given a 'famnaiba' and 'famnaibi'. The graceful dance style of 'Khamba Thoibi' saw its origin in the village of Moirang itself.
