Amravathi Dam or the Reservoir is being located in Amaravthinagar, TamilNadu state. Moreover, the Crocodile farm is located very near to the Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary in the district of Coimbatore, Tamilnadu. Amravthi dam in the Amaravthinagar is located at a distance of near about 25 kms towards the south on National Highway from Udumalpet.
The Amaravathi Reservoir or the dam is constructed across the River Amaravathi. Moreover, the Amravathi Dam is very well known for its high fisheries product. Well, it is also the largest wild breeding population of Crocodiles in the South India. Amravathi reservoir is near about 9.31 kms long and is near about 33.53 meters deep. In the year 1957, the Amravati Dam was constructed. However, due to the heavy siltation, the capacity of the dam was reduced to 3 TMCFT. The main aim for the construction of the Amravathi dam was to provide water for irrigation purpose and control of flood.
Amravathi dam is a very suitable place for the breeding of the different varieties of fish. In this reservoir, the non-indigenous fish such as Tilapia is a major portion of fish being preserved. Moreover, one can find a laid out park, which is located very close to the Amravathi Dam. Here, tourist can climp steep steps on the dam to have a stunning birds eye view towards the Anamalai hills and Palni Hills. The place is located at the distance of near about 25 kms from the Pollachi. Pollachi is a developed as the District excursion centre for the tourism.
In the Amravati Dam, largest population of Wild Crocodiles dwells in the state of Tamilnadu, India. Moreover, theses crocodiles breed in the river such as Thennar, Chinnar ad Pambar that drain into the Amaravathi dam. However, Broad snouted Mugger crocodiles are also known as the Persian Crocodiles and Marsh Crocodiles. Mainly, these crocodiles eat fishes and other reptiles, but sometimes it can be very dangerous for human beings. Amravathi reservoir is located in the Tamil Nadu state. Well, it is the largest wild breeding population of crocodiles in all over India. Currently, it is being estimated that the population of adults are 60 and sub adults are 37 in the reservoirs. The various other types of fishes found in the reservoir include Oriental Small Clawed Otters, Indian Flap Shelled Turtles, Indian Cormorants and many more.
In the year 1976, Amravati Sagar Crocodile farm was founded. This crocodile nursery is recognized as one of the largest crocodile nursery in India. Moreover, this crocodile nursery is being located at a distance of near about one km from the Amaravathi Dam. From this nursery, many crocodiles are being reintroduced in the wild environment. Here, the eggs of the crocodiles are accumulated from the different wild nests and then the same eggs are being hatched in the crocodile farm. One can see, number of crocodiles resting under sunshine and striding on one another. However, three forest department personnel are being deployed to take care of the crocodile farm.
