Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary is being named after the Late Prime Minister of India Smt. Indira Gandhi. This sanctuary is located in the Anamalai hills in the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu state. This National park is a part of the Niligri Biosphere Reserve. Formerly, park was known as Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, which is combined in an area of near about 95,860 hectares. However, the national park covers an area of near about 108 sq. kms. Moreover, it is spread in an area of 958 sq km. The vegetation that covers the forest is of the mixed deciduous variety. Here, sanctuary is rich in evergreen and semi evergreen forests. The semi evergreen habitat of the park contains teak, rose wood and many more miscellaneous tropical species. Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary comprises near about 8000 species of plants. The rare species of flora found in the Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary includes COmbretum Ovalifolium, Dispyros Nilagrica, Gymnopteis Contaimirans, Habebarai Reriflora, Polypodum Pleroupus, Alsophila, Bulbophyllim sp, Lasianthus Useruloses, Angiopterris Erectra, Gnetum Ula, Impaliens Elegans, Lycopodium Cernum, Ranunculus Reniformis, and smunda Regulis.

The animal population at the Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary is opposite of the flora. Moreover, it also has some of the aggressive creatures such as Tigers, Panthers, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear and many more. The other animals that are also found here in a large number include Elephants, Pangolin, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse, Mouse Deer, Spotted Dear, Nilgiris Tahr, Civet Car etc. The arboreal animals such as rare Lion Tailed Macaque, Bonnet Masaque, Common Langur, Nilgiris Langur, Malabar Giant Squirrel, and Squirrel Giant Squirrel are also spotted in the Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary. Here, you can spot near about 500 species of bird, which includes the local residing birds as well as the migratory birds. The species of birds found are Cormorants, Quails, Hornbills, Orioles, Storks, Eagles, and Owls. Some of them includes racket Tailed Drongo , Wynad Laughing thrush, Black headed Oriole, Paradise Flycatcher, Whistling Thrust, Emerald Dove, Green Pigeon, Tickell's Flower Pecker, Rufus Wood, Great Indian Malabar Pied Horn Bill, Fiary Blue Bird, Green Billed Malkhoha , Black Eagle and many more. The main birding area in the sanctuary is Top Slip. Many birds can be seen from this tower. The Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary is very well connected to all the major cities of the South India with roadways, railways as well as the Airways. One will not face more problems to reach Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary. Moreover, private vehicles are also permitted in the National Park for driving. One should avail a private vehicle in order to view the sight properly. Walking is allowed in the forest but only with the proper guide. Transport system is excellent at Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary.
