Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary is the largest and very well preserved sanctuary. It is situated in Tamil Nadu, which lies in the Western Ghats of Southern India. However, it is better known as Anaimalais Sanctuary. It is surrounded in an area of 958 sq.km. This sanctuary is very rich in fauna and flora. Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary lies in the Coimbatore district. The National Sanctuary is named after the Indira Gandhi, the late prime minister of India. Topslip name has being originated from the old local practice of rolling down the teak timber logs from the hills. However, the national park feature many water bodies which includes Konalar, Varagaliar, karuneerar, Chinnar and Amaravati. Flora at Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary :

Flora at Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary is typically found in the south Western Ghats. However, the rainfall supports a rich vegetation growth here. Here, you can find more than 2000 species of plant and more than 400 medicinal plants. The national sanctuary has tropical wet evergreen and semi evergreen forest, dry deciduous, tropical montane, grasslands, and thorn forest. At the lower elevation, trees found in forests are Dipterocarpus indicus, Dipterocarpus Bourdilloni, Strombosia Ceylanica, and Ochalandra. At the medium elevations, trees found are Mesua ferrea, Palaquiu ellipticum, Cullenia exarillata and many more. Mainly, the moist deciduous forest comprises lagerstroemia microcarpa, Tectona Grandis and Dillenia Pentagyna. Here Albizia amara, Acacia Sp, and the Gyrocarpus Jacquini mark the dry decidous forest. The common tree types found in the national park includes Hopea Parviflora, Vateria Indica, Mesua Ferrea, Cullenia Excesl, Alstonia scholaris, Calophyllum tomentosum, Mangifera Indica, Podocarpus Wallichianus Machilus Macrantha, and many more. In the various parts of sanctuary, you can also find cinchona, rubber, Bamboo, Coffee and tea plants.

Fauna at Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary :

Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary is home to various fauna species some of which are also under the threatened tag. Some of the animals, which are found in sanctuary, includes brown mongoose, Malabar spiny Dormouse, rusty-spotted cat, sloth bear, sambar deer, smooth-coated otter, Nilgiri langur, Tiger, elephant, Asiatic wild dog, lion-tailed macaque and many more. The two major attractions of this National Sanctuary are Asian Elephants and Niligiri Tahr. The threatened mammals in sanctuary include Giant Squirrel, Indian Leopard, and Indian Pangolin. Apart form this animals species golden jackal, Small Indian civet, Strip-necked mongoose, Ruddy mongoose, Grey slender loris, barking deer, wild boar, bonnet macaque, Asian palm civet, Indian crested porcupine, Indian giant squirrel, three-striped palm squirrel and many more are found in the National park. Reptile found in the National park includes rogs, flying lizards, forest lizards, turtles, tortoises, pythons, vipers, kraits, vipers, grass snakes and many more. Here, you can find more than 300 species of butterfly.

Birds at Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary :

Indira Gandhi national Park is home to near about 200 bird species. It includes birds like cormorants, teals, darters, quails, jungle fowls, Indian peafowls, parakeets, harriers, egrets, kingfishers, storks, hawk eagles, owls, nightjars, orioles, shrikes, warbler, woodpecker, falcons, kites, and many more. The rare species of bird found at Indira Gandhi National Sanctuary includes Ceylon frogmouth, Nilgiri pipit, pied hornbill, White-bellied shortwing, Nilgiri wood pigeon and many more. The endemic species found in National Park includes Wynaad Laughingthrush, India Rufous Babblers, White Bellied Treepies, and grey-headed bulbul.
