Barren Island in Andaman and Island
Barren Island, which is situated in the Andaman Sea, is known to be the only active volcano in India. This volcanic island lies only 136 kilometers away from the capital city Port Blair. The island which measures around three kilometers has a large basin of the volcano which rises around half kilometers away from the coast of the sea. The depth of the basin or crater is measured around 140 fathoms.

The Barren Island lies on the inner arc, extending between Myanmar and Sumatra. This volcano comprises of a caldera open towards the west, with a central polygenetic vent enclosing at least five nested tuff cones. The last volcanic activity in the island occurred in the year 1994. However, Indian Coast Guard informed the team of renewed activity in January 2000.
Although there are no monuments or any such thing on the Barren Island in Andaman and Nicobar, people still like to have a glimpse of it. Thus, they travel through ships and without getting down on the island, they get the whole enchanting feeling of the island.
The first volcanic eruption was recorded in the year 1787 and since then this island has witnessed several such eruptions. This is one of the reasons the place is not accommodated by any life except few birds, goats, bats, etc. who could survive in tough conditions.
Barren Island is a natural habitat for wild goats which live here by drinking the salt water and is an exclusive feature of this island. The barren land could be approached by board vessels and the island could be viewed from the vessel. No one is allowed to get down on the island and the travel to this island is a spectacular audacious experience.
Two cold water fountains have been located in the dry drains in the south eastern part of this island. The distance between the two springs is 100 meters. Feral goat is the largest specie of fauna available on this island. They are believed to have been left over by some sailors. However, surviving in this tough condition is the most amazing thing about these wild beasts.
It must be remembered that for visiting Barren Island volcano which is still very much active, there is no better option than availing seaplane which gives you a close view of the landscape of the island volcano and also the astonishing sites from all around.

India's last active volcano in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands erupted on December 31 2004, after the earthquake which set off the tsunami, killing thousands of people. People had been evacuated after the eruption began and there were no reports of injury. Lava was said to be flowing out of the edge of the crater.
