Little Nicobar Island in Andaman and Nicobar

Nicobar Islands are situated to the south of Andaman Islands. There are twenty four islands in Nicobar group. These little islets are divided into three groups- Northern Group, Central Group and Southern Group. Little Nicobar is of one the islands that form Southern group of Nicobar Islands. This Island is a marvel of nature which abounds various secrets and awe inspiring majesty in its heart. In the present day and age, about 432 people inhabit Little Nicobar Island according to the census of 2001. The population mostly comprises of aboriginal tribes.

Little Nicobar Island has an elongated shape which is narrowed towards its northern part. As far as the area of Little Nicobar island is concerned, it is 159.1 km sq. A few smaller islands reside on the shores of Little Nicobar. These islands are- Pulomilo, Trak/Mafuya, Menchal, Meroe and Treis/Albatei. Location of Little Nicobar Island

To the east of Little Nicobar Island, Menchal Island stands; to its west, Pulo Milo Island is seated and Sombrero Point is at its extreme north. The Katchal Island is located at a distance of about 70 km to the north.

How to Reach Little Nicobar Island

From Kamrota you can reach Katchal by ferry and from Katchal Little Nicobar Island is not very far. You can try reaching Little Nicobar Island from Katchal through dingy boats run by fishermen.

Tourist Attractions at Little Nicobar Island

The Nicobars abound in coconut palm, casuarina and pandanus trees. The fauna of Great and Little Nicobar islands consist of Giant Robber Crab, long-tailed Monkeys, Nicobarese Pigeons and Megapode, a rare bird found in Great Nicobar.

Beaches on Little Nicobar Island are another great source of enjoying your vacations. Immaculate natural beauty is spread everywhere. Emerald waters keep kissing smooth and clean sands every now and then; the flora painted in different hues of green sends you a welcoming note when you visit this island and the fresh fragrant breeze rejuvenate your senses.

There are four Turtle species that nest more specifically on the western coasts of Little Nicobar Island. Hawksbill sea turtle and green sea turtle keep visiting some beaches of Little Nicobar Island.

Andaman and Nicobar Administration annually organizes an Island Tourism Festival in December to January. It displays developmental facets of these exotic islands. Water sports competitions like Canoe Race, Nicobari Hodi Race and Scuba Diving are also organized. Festival concentrates on eco-friendly tourist destination.

Little Nicobar Island in Andaman and Nicobar is the fourth largest island in the Nicobar group of islands. It is undulating with a tapered flatland coastal belt around it which broadens along the west coast. No major rivers are there, but numerous smaller rivulets and streams originate from the hills here. The only deep bays in the north of this island were fringed with mangroves. Majority of the coast was covered with coconut palms. Indeed, Little Nicobar Island is small just in terms of name; otherwise it is a huge storehouse of natural wonders and beauty.
