Location of North Passage Island
North Passage Island is located at a distance of 70 km from Port Blair and 30 km northeast of Havelock Island. This island is situated between Strait Island immediately to the south (abode to the last bits and pieces of the Great Andamanese tribe), Guitar Island and then Long Island immediately to the North. Across the channel, to the east of North Passage Island, lies Outram Island in Ritchie's archipelago. The vast expanse of Middle Andaman lies much closer to the west of this island having maiden beauty of nature.
How to Reach North Passage Island
The North passage island is not connected by regular boat or ferry services. You have to hire boat from Long Island or Eratta jetty, Rangat to reach Merk Bay beach. It is appropriate for day visit to enjoy the magnificent solitude. It is advisable to go on this island only for a day trip as facility if accommodation is not available here.
Habitation in North Passage Island
North Passage Island in Andaman and Nicobar has very diminutive history of habitation, other than erratic visits from different sects of the Great Andamanese Tribe. Just about 100 acres of land behind Merk Bay beach was handed over to the Agriculture Department of Andaman Islands four decades ago. This was done in order to set up a coconut plantation. The only inhabitants of this island at present are representatives of the Forest Department and caretakers of the Coconut Plantation. Needless to say, a single digit population inhabits North Passage Island.
Attractions of North Passage Island
This island is fortunate to have a stunning and impressive beach known as 'Merk Bay'. It is a coral white sandy and shallow beach. You would love to spend hours on this fascinating beach. Merk Bay lies on northeastern side of North Passage, look out towards Ritchie's Archipelago and fronts the coconut plantation. On the Merk Bay beach, you can enjoy the delight of basking in sun, swimming and snorkeling. The sea around this island houses playful dolphins.
