The main attraction of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan is the decorative architecture in the form of Havelis. The city has witnessed different forms of architecture in different eras. The Rajputana style of architecture was dominant in ancient times. The medieval period witnessed dominance of the fusion of Rajputana and Islamic architecture. It was during this era, that most of the Havelis were built.

There are some very beautiful mansions in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. These are called as Havelis and belong to the rich merchants and other wealthy people like the Wazirs and landlords. There are a number of havelis in Jaisalmer as there were many Wazirs and landlords here.

These mansions are built in sandstone and are an architectural marvel. The Jaisalmer havelis are built keeping in mind the fine details. The pieces are carved with minute details and pieced together in different patterns. They are in perfect harmony though they are very loud in their designs. The latticework covering the havelis is carved of wood and yellow sandstone. These havelis are the last truly Indian buildings without a tint of European architecture. They have a number of large rooms with lots of open space. It is a treat to visit Havelis in Jaisalmer.

Nathmal ki Haveli- an Architectural Marvel

Two brothers Hati and Lalu constructed Nathmal Ki Haveli in the 19th century. The left and right wings were carved by the brothers independently and are very similar in their look. There are interesting stories about the haveli and its construction. This was a prime ministers house and the highlights of this haveli are the yellow sandstone elephants. These elephants stand majestically at the entrance and there is an intricate carved front door. The carving is so minute it looks as if it was designed and done by artisans who design jewelry.

Patwon ki Haveli

This haveli is the most outstanding of all the other havelis in Jaisalmer. This was the first haveli in Jaisalmer and became the pioneer of construction and other havelis in the place. Since this is the first haveli, it has a lot of significance. Patwon ki haveli takes you to the colossal residence of the Patwas.

Patwon Ki Haveli is located in a narrow lane in the heart of the city. One of the apartments is painted with stunning murals. Actually, this haveli is a cluster of five different houses built for five sons of Guman Chand.

This haveli is a grand display of architecture and has elegant works of arts. There are paintings depicting women, men with broad moustaches and colorful turbans over their heads, battles and hunting trips. A renowned dealer in brocade, gold and silver embroidery of their time from places like Afghanistan to China built it.

Salim Singh ki Haveli

Diwan Salim Singh Mohta built this haveli about 300 years ago. A part of this haveli is still used as residence by the owners. The most fascinating feature of this mansion is the arched roof with superb carved brackets in the form of peacocks. The pavilion seems as if it is floating on top of the building.

Salim Singh Ki Haveli is situated at the eastern end of the city and looks as if it has come from the Arabian nights, with its top blossoming like a wild flower. This haveli is worth a close examination to admire the beauty and is now a part of National Heritage.
