The division of Khasi Hills occurred on 28th October, 1976.It was divided into East Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills. East Khasi Hills District was further divided into two administrative districts-East Khasi Hills District and Ri-Bhoi District on 4th June, 1992.
Tribes Living In Khasi Hills
Mainly the tribal people belonging to the tribe of Khasi inhabit the Khasi Hills. They address themselves as 'Ki Hynniewtrep'. In Khasi language 'Ki Hynniewtrep' means 'the seven huts'. Their language is also known as 'Khasi'. It is the northern most Austro-Asiatic language. A majority of the Khasi population follow the original Khasi religion, Ka Niam Tynrai, though some population follows Unitarian sect. The most common source of livelihood of the tribal people of Khasi tribe is the 'jhoom cultivation'. One of the chief products of jhoom cultivation by the Khasis is that of betel leaf.
