The Khasi Hills District was divided into two districts- the East Khasi Hills District and the West Khasi Hills District. The division took place on October 28, 1976. East Khasi Hills District witnessed further division on June 4, 1992. It was divided into two administrative districts of East Khasi Hills District and Ri-Bhoi District. Location and climate of East Khasi Hills District

East Khasi Hills District is located in the north eastern state of Meghalaya. The climate of this district ranges from temperate in the plateau region to warm tropical and sub-tropical parts on the Northern and Southern regions. South-west monsoon influences the entire district. This monsoon commences usually from the month of May and continues till September. A major part of the year has humid weather but between December and March, it remains dry here.

Topography of East Khasi Hills District

The area of East Khasi Hills District is mostly hilly and has deep gorges and ravines in its southern region. The Shillong Plateau is the most important physiographic feature of East Khasi Hills District. The Shillong Plateau is interspersed with river valley and then it falls sharply in the southern portion. Thus deep gorges and ravine are formed in Mawsynram and Shella-Bholaganj bordering Bangladesh. At a distance of 10 kms from the city, Shillong Peak lies, that is the highest point in the district as well as in the State. It provides a wonderful vista of the beautiful countryside.

Area of East Khasi Hills District

Northern part of this district is enclosed by the plain of Ri-Bhoi District which steadily rises to the undulating grasslands of the Shillong plateau. East Khasi Hills District is bordered by the Jaintia Hills District to the east and the West Khasi Hills District to the west.

  1. Shillong is speckled with numerous tourist attractions.
  2. Cherrapunji is a place of immense tourist interest here.
  3. Nohkalikai Falls is among the tallest falls in India which makes an attraction here.
  4. An artificial lake having immense beauty, Umiam Lake is also a tourist spot here.

Infrastructure of East Khasi Hills District

Shillong is not only the headquarters of the East Khasi Hills District but also is the capital of Meghalaya. NH 44 of 103 km and 240 km respectively connects Shillong to Guwahati and Silchar. Closest rail head and airport are found in Guwahati. Trucks, jeeps and tractors transport agricultural and commercial products in and from the city. All the block headquarters in the district are well connected by roads but the villages in the remote areas are poorly connected and transport services are derisory.

East Khasi Hills District is a small place in Meghalaya but has grown significantly in the bygone era. In terms of area, it covers an area of 2752 sq. Kms. Currently, East Khasi Hills District has Eight Community and Rural Development blocks. If its progress kept increasing at the same pace, it will soon become a recognized tourist place of India.
