Eden Gardens is undoubtedly India's one of finest cricket grounds. The lush green field has been hosting first class cricket matches since the year 1917-18. The first test match was held here in January 1934 played against the Douglas Jardine's MCC. In February 1987, the stadium showcased its first one day match against Pakistan. Till date the famous Eden Gardens in Kolkata have hosted more than 34 tests and 21 one day international matches.

The cricket ground is actually a part of a huge garden which was established in the year 1840. The garden was named after the sister of Lord Auckland, who was then the Governor General of India. It was built with an objective to create a garden in the fashion of the classical biblical style of the Garden of Eden. The huge garden is located at the bank of the river Hoogly and is spotted with beautiful trees, shrubs, a huge lake and a very old pagoda. The garden has the essence of the fervor of the cricketing club as well as the beauty of the serene nature.

  • India accumulated a huge run score of 657-7 while playing against Australia in the test series held in the year 2000-2001.
  • Harbhajan Sing was the first Indian to make a hat trick after taking three successive wickets of the opponent team Australia in the test series 2000-2001.
  • The mammoth score of 281 runs made by VVS Laxman was also scored in this ground in the come back test match played against the world champions Australian in the year 2000 and 2001.
  • The bowling spree of Anil Kumble (12/6) in the final match of the Hero Cup played against West Indies is regarded as one of the commendable figures in India bowling history.

The cricket ground is featured with covered strands, a modern pavilion and a club house. The ground is owned and maintained by the Cricket Association of Bengal. Though statistics says the ground has not been so lucky for the Indian team but the stadium remains fully packed even on red letter days.
