Rooted in the preachings of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, the institute was established in order to cultivate global cultural genres. Cultural heritage is common to all human races and the institute opines of tying all threads of cultures into one in order to unite the entire humanity.
Initially the cultural institute was located in small rented rooms in North Kolkata. But with institute's increasing participation in various cultural activities and contribution to world culture, the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture is now located at the South Kolkata in a magnificent building. Adjacent to the building is the INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS' HOUSE where guests, scholars, students are welcomed so that they can get the opportunity to carry out study, research or simply exchange of cultural ideas to enrich one's psychological and cultural aptitudes. Everyday the institute has fixed schedules of seminar, lectures, symposia, scripture reading classes, study circles, educational competitions and a wide variety of cultural and religious programs.
The mission has a General Library with specialization on humanities and social science. The library has over 2,19,510 books and 424 Indian and foreign journals. The MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY of the institute has fascinating and valuable artifacts. The gallery is divided into four sections, the painting, sculptures, folk arts and manuscripts (MSS). There are also huge reserve of books that are suitable for children between the age group of 6 and 12 years.

The School of Languages of the institute conducts lessons on various world languages. Nearly 8000 students are taught languages like Sanskrit, Arabic, Chinese, German, French, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Persian, Spanish, Bengali, Urdu Hindi, and even spoken English.
The institute also conducts publication programs like monthly Bulletin in order to spread awareness of various aspects of culture among common public, two volumes of Religions of the World, Upanishads, Concordance, Vivekananda in Contemporary Indian News, A Portrait of Sri Ramakrishna, The Cultural Heritage of India of eight huge volumes and such other publications.
Ramakrishna Mission Institute in Kolkata offers various diploma courses too. Here, one gets the opportunity to obtain a diploma course in the Appreciation of Indian Art. Sarada Devi School of Fine Arts and Crafts for Children; Annual Exhibition on Art are run and conducted by the institute respectively.
