Thirteen elevated mountain peaks encircle this fort. It is situated on top of a ridge around 1100 meters above sea level. Kumbhalgarh fort has a wall that extends 36 kms in length around the perimeter of the fort. This wall is the second longest wall after the Great Wall of China. The walls of the fort are broad and eight horses can stand side by side comfortably on it. The frontal walls have a thickness of 15 feet and Kumbhalgarh has seven fortified gateways. The beautiful winding road leads through deep ravines and thick forest to the Arait pol. There are Hulla pol, Hanuman pol, Ram pol, Bhairava pol, Paghra pol and the top-khana pol. There are huge watch towers, seven ramparts folded with one other with designed walls. Due to the strong structure, this fort was unbeatable till date. It is spectacularly lit for some time each evening and this is a remarkable sight.
There are nearly 360 temples in the fort complex. The Shiva temple is huge and has a huge Shivlanga.
There is a famous palace in the Kumbhalgarh Fort. It is called as Badal Mahal and is located on the topmost point in the fort. It is the birthplace of Maharana Pratap who was a great king and warrior of Rajasthan. Badal Mahal has beautiful rooms with lovely color combination of green, white and Turquoise. These present a bright contrast to the earthy colors of the Kumbhalgarh Fort. It gives you a feeling as if you are wandering in the clouds hence, this place is also known as Palace of Clouds. You can get a beautiful panoramic view of the downtown.
During the late 19th century, Rana Fateh Singh took initiatives to rebuild the palace. This fort offered refuge to the rulers of Mewar during times of dissension. Even King Udai Singh was kept here for safety when he was a small kid during battles.
There are a number of interesting ruins around the fort and there are many magnificent palaces and havelis. There are ancient remnants that you can explore while you decide to take a stroll through the ravines of Kumbhalgarh Fort.
