It is recorded in the annals of history that traders, travelers, romantics, horses and camels ascended and descended in this valley before setting off on a journey to Central Asia. The graves of Yarkandi merchants of yore are a living testimony of this past journey. You can see these graves in the Hunder village on the banks of River Nubra. Nubra Valley also beautifully blends cultures. River Nubra joins River Shyok near Diskit. Then the two flow as one aiming to become an inseparable part of the River Indus. In the Nubra valley, Buddhist religion is predominant having some dots of Muslim hamlets. On the other hand, the Shyok valley has some dotted areas of Buddhists and is dominated by Muslim population. The oneness is clearly seen by the places and buildings like chortens, monasteries, graveyards and mosques. Though the terrain has lots of contrasts, you have to visit the valley in person to believe it to the fullest.
The grandeur of Nubra valley is enough to draw tourists to its land. It is a paradise for the tourists. Monasteries dotting the Nubra River and Gompa in the Diskit village add to the charm of this valley. According to the locals, there are many manuscripts of Mongolia and Tibet inside this 14th century Gompa. This Gompa has an alluring story associated to it. Locals tell that a Mongol demon stayed here. After his homicide, his body without his head kept running. His crumpled head and hand lie in monastery till date.
A tear drop shaped pond-Panamik pond is enclosed by hillocks. There is a myth that you can see a reflection of Potala Palace of Lhasa in it, if you are lucky. According to another belief, if you make a wish after a perambulation of the pond; your wish will be granted. If the myth factor is separated from the pond, then also it is worth seeing. Panamik pond is also renowned for its hot springs.
Nubra does not have many connections to the outside world. Its only link to the outside world is through the Khardung La pass which is the highest motorable pass on the globe. Today, Nubra valley in Ladakh has become a dead end which was once a link between Yarkand and Central Asia. There is a route from Sasoma village that was used by the travelers and traders in the days of old. The most expressive poetry would not be able to bring the true beauty of this valley.
