    Location Of Leh

    Leh is the capital of Ladakh. It is in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and is located at an altitude of 3,500 m. Mountains dominate the landscape of Leh.

    Ideal Season To visit Leh

    The best time to visit Leh is the season of summer that is from the month of June to September. Winters in Leh are very unwelcoming as in winters the temperature here drops below zero degree. The weather becomes bitterly cold and the conditions are very harsh. The place becomes inaccessible in winters because of the heavy snowfall.

    History Of Leh

    It is learnt that the Chinese knew full well about the trade route to India through Ladakh. A Tibetan prince-Nyima gon is credited for the construction of the chief sculptures at Shey towards the end of the 10th century A.D. Shey was the ancient seat of the Ladakhi kings. This place is at a distance of 15 kms from Leh. There is a mosque that is believed to be built in 17th Century A.D. which can accommodate more than 500 people. This mosque is a blend of Tibetan and Islamic architecture. From the four cardinal directions, many routes converge on Leh. There were some routes from Leh to Lhasa as well.

    The Royal residence that is the first one in the records now lies in ruins on the top of the high Namgyal Peak. Behind the Tsemo Gompa Monastery there are some older walls of fortifications which were known as 'Dard Castle'. Below this castle, there are Chamba and Chenresi monasteries but their time period is not known. King Sengge Namgyal built the Leh palace here in 1631 A.D. in the mid 19th century when the Kashmiri forces besieged the palace, it was abandoned. The royal family had to move to Stok palace on the southern bank of River Indus where they live today.
