Leh Palace
Leh Palace is the old palace of the kings of Ladakh. This palace was built by the King Sengge Namgyal in the 16th century. This is a nine storeyed palace that overlooks the town of Leh from Tsemo hill's southwest slope.
Chamba Temple
Chamba temple is enclosed in decrepit medieval mansions. It has one room that houses a huge image of Buddha and some old wall paintings that are worth watching.
Jami Masjid
Painted in green and white, this mosque is at the top of the street.
Leh Fort
Zorawar Singh is credited to have built the Leh Fort but it can not be visited because it lies within the military area. The Leh Fort has three temples but they also can not be visited.
Leh Gompa
Leh Gompa stands high above the Leh Palace. Leh Gompa also overlooks the dilapidated old palace of Kings of Tagpebums.
Sankar Gompa
This Gompa can be visited on foot. This is a very fascinating place here. Sankar Gompa comes under Spituk Gompa. This monastery is fairly active and few of the monks permanently reside here. A visit to this gompa in the evening is worth to be made. It is the time when the monks welcome you and give you a warm treatment by offering a yak butter tea, Tsampa and boiled and spiced mustard plant.
Other Leh Gompas
The older town of Leh has numerous lesser gompas like the gompa of guru Lakhang which is beneath the large Chorten. There are gompas of comparatively less fame as they do not contain interesting matter as compared to other gompas around Leh. The gompas of less interest are the Chamba Lakhang and Chenrezig Lakhang.
Shanti Stupa
Shanti Stupa is above Changspa village. This 'Peace Pagoda' was inaugurated by Dalai Lama in 1983. The sides of this peace pagoda are decorated with gilt panels that depict the episodes of life of Buddha. This Shanti Stupa is one of those monuments that were erected around India by a peace sect of Japanese Buddhists.
Alchi Gompa
It was built in the 11th century on the banks of River Indus. It is among the most famous and largest monasteries here.
Stok Palace and Museum
King Tsespal Tondup Namgyal is credited for its construction in early part of the 19th century. The Stok Palace is at a distance of around 14 kms from the town of Leh. Currently, the royal family occupies this palace. Here is a museum inside the Stok Palace that showcases ceremonial dresses of kings, royal jewellery and crowns.
Thiksey Monastery
This monastery is amongst the most beautiful ones in Ladakh region. T is famous for the images of Shakyamuni Buddha, Maitriya Buddha, Mahakal, Dharamkaya and Bhairava.
Spituk Monastery
It was built in 11th century. The biggest temple here is Gonkhang.
Shey Palace and Gompa
King Deldan Namgyal built it in 1430 AD. A three storey high Copper statue of Buddha Shakyamuni catches your attention. .
