Matheran is a beautiful hill station in Maharashtra state, which is about 8oo meters above sea level. It is near from Mumbai and Pune and is very reachable.

Matheran is a very beautiful hill station near Pune and Mumbai. The place is unique as there are no vehicles here as they are totally banned. There are no concrete roads here and the present roads are made up of Red mud. This transports you in a totally new world altogether and brings you near nature. There are various tourist spots in Matheran. These places are scenic points in Matheran and are very beautiful. The toy train in Matheran is another tourist attraction and the ride is full of scenic beauty and very enjoyable. You can enjoy a nice horse ride while you see the different points or travel in a hand pulled rickshaw.

By Air: The nearest airport to Matheran is Mumbai and Pune airport. You can take a flight to these airports and then travel further to Matheran.

By Train: You can take a train from Mumbai or Pune and reach Neral. Neral is well connected by local trains from CST along the Karjat rute. Long distance trains come to Karjat and you can get down here and take a local to Neral junction. There are a number of trains from Pune and other important railway stations. The journey to Matheran in itself is a trip as the scenes are very enjoyable and a visual delight. The route is not straight and has many turns and slopes. The ascent starts little after Hardar hills and it continues till you reach Jamnapatti station. Here the road and railway rack appear as if they have almost come together and this is very interesting. They meet and then part again to meet, this is fun to watch till you reach Bhekra Kund. This horseshoe embankment is near Mount Barry and is a popular tourist spot in Matheran. The route continues for another mile and enters a tunnel. The railway route is zigzag and has sharp turns as it comes out of the tunnel. The train crosses Panorama point and Simpson Tank and reaches Matheran Bazaar. You need to book tickets for the toy train well in advance.

By Road: You can drive from Pune taking the expressway towards Mumbai. You need to turn at the Haal Phata near Khopoli and go straight to the bottom of Matheran Ghat road. You can travel from Mumbai and take the expressway till Khopoli exit. Follow the Pune- Mumbai route and turn towards Karjat. You can reach Neral and reach the bottom of Matheran hill ghat road till Dasturi car park. No vehicles are allowed beyond this point and you can either walk, ride a horse or take manual rickshaws.

Alternatively, you can hire a private car or taxi and reach Neral. There are also many private luxury buses and state travel buses from important places in the state.
