Crawford Market was the main wholesale market of the former city of Bombay till 1966, when it was shifted to Navi Mumbai. Crawford market is a shopper's paradise. Architecture of the Market:

Crawford Market covers an area of 72000 square yards. The Arthur Crawford Market was built during the tenure of Arthur Crawford as Bombay's Municipal Commissioner. The market was renamed Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market after a famous social reformer, and houses a wholesale: fruit and vegetable market, poultry, fish-meat stalls and a few stalls selling smuggled goods like Mars, Toblerone and Kraft cheese. One of the main features of the building is the Clock Tower which is decorated with beautiful Victorian carvings. The wall painting on the main entrance is very notable and depicts Indian Peasantry in the cultivation fields. This was designed by Lockwood Kipling, father of the famous novelist Rudyard Kipling. He designed the fountain inside the market, but today it is barely visible. The place has been designed in such a way that it receives sufficient sunlight during the day. The structure of the market is a combination of Flemish and Norman architecture.
