Location:

Powai Lake, 25 miles from Bombay, is a calm extension of water by the side of a motor road. It can be approached via King's Circle, Sion, and Kurla or through Santa Cruz and Andheri. Lake Powai is smaller lake of the two and is located a little west of the campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), one of the premier institutions of science and technology in India.

Powai is a northern suburb of Mumbai, which shares its name with a lake in the same locality. It is reachable from the western suburbs by the Saki Vihar Road, the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road and the Aarey Colony Road. Adi Shankaracharya Road connects Powai to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Road and the Eastern Express Highway which are the gateways to eastern suburbs.

History:

Powai historically has been the home to five temples. A small place called Panchakutir (meaning five abodes) is still present in Powai. One of these temples is devoted to Goddess Padmavati. It is believed that the word Powai came from the temple. The etymology is drawn from Padma Aai, which means mother Padma in the local language Marathi.

Significance:

It is an artificial lake towards the west of the Indian Institute of Technology, the premier institute of Science and Technology. The lake built by the British in 1890, adds to the charm of the Bombay city in India. It owes its name to Framaji Kavasji Powai Estate, belonging to a Parsi merchant.

How to Reach:

The nearest Mumbai Suburban Railway station is Kanjurmarg on the Central line. Although it is out of the city but it is easily accessible by all means of vehicles like buses and cabs. Once one reaches Mumbai, then there is no problem in reaching the spot.
