Infrastructure:

It was established in 1951, with an initial grant of Rs. 200,000 from Mr. Taraporewala, a Parsi philanthropist. It is now maintained by the Maharashtra State Government.

The main hall has two sections. The first is of 160 cubic feet and the second a miniature section with 2 cubic feet. The aquarium has three large rooms where fishes are displayed in such a manner as to highlight the attractiveness of their appearances.

Collection:

This Aquarium houses striking marine life and rare species of fishes. The huge tanks have sharks, octopus, kite fishes and the smaller tanks display corals, worms, sea flowers and sea horses. Pearls, shells and articles crafted from shells are also displayed here.

In all, over 100 species of marine and fresh water fish are on exhibition, including sharks, turtles and morays. It also includes seven varieties of coral fish from the Lakshadweep Islands which were added to the collection last year. There is a proposal to renovate this into an underwater oceanarium, where people can undertake an undersea walk enclosed by marine life. There are plans to construct an underwater sea walk in Mumbai but as of right now fish enthusiasts will have to wait until that plan becomes a reality. It is soon to be renovated into a high-tech Aquarium with a glass vision sea world.
