History:

Worli was one of the original seven islands that constituted the city of Mumbai. Although primarily a fishing village but the Worli Fort and a British fort were also located here.

What it is Famous For?

Over two thousand years ago, Mumbai was an archipelago of seven islands occupied by the kolis. These tribal fisher folk still live here in tightly weaved communities. The best place to see them is in the 600-year-old Worli Fishing Village that stands on a sliver land jutting onto the sea. Forced into one of its winding paths, one will instantly get the smell of dried fishes and colorful koli women with their dark skin make up and chunky tribal jewellery. Towards the ending of the village there is a small Portuguese fort with remnants of an old armory, soldiers' barracks and thick walls.

Main Attractions:

Traditionally Worli has always been identified with the Worli Fort and Worli Fishing Village. The Worli Fort is an ancient British fort in the area which is often mistakenly referred to as being built by the Portuguese. It was actually built by the British around 1675. The fort built on the Worli hill overlooked the Mahim Bay and was used as a lookout for enemy ships and pirates. This was when the city comprised seven islands.

It also has a mosque, the Haji Ali Dargah on a rock in the sea, which was connected at low-tide to the island by a natural causeway. The island of Worli was connected to the main island of Mumbai in 1784 with the completion of the Hornby Vellard. The Hornby Vellard is now known as Lala Lajpat Rai Road.

How to Reach:

It is easily accessible by bus, taxi or any other vehicle after reaching Mumbai.
