Nestled in the Southern Western Ghats, Munnar protects and envelopes the endangered and variety of species in the Chinar Wildlife Sanctuary near Munnar. The Sanctuary is situated at a distance of 60km and 20 km from the combination of sandalwood and ancient culture and souvenirs of Marayoor. The Sanctuary is spread on an area of 90 sq km and gained the title of a life sanctuary in the year 1984. The Sanctuary is a merger of the thorny and rustic climate with the pleasantness of the tea gardens of Munnar.
Climate of the sanctuary:
The Sanctuary belongs to the region of rain shadow; Chinnar merely receives an annual rainfall for 48 days. This gives a rough and course look to the vegetation and soil of Chinnar. The soil of the Sanctuary is wet by the silvery rain in the months of October and November. The uniqueness in the climatic conditions of the Sanctuary lies in its fluctuating rainfall according to the changing altitudes which is manifested in the type of changing vegetation as one moves down the Sanctuary. The thorny forests are interspersed with deciduous forests, if the route is traversed, the deciduous forest dominate the Sanctuary followed by riparian, shoals and grasslands.

The wildlife is interspersed with a variety of stone types and plain surfaces. The fluctuations between the low and high regions give it a look of hilly slopes covered with shoals.
