Spread over an area of 97 sq km at a height of 1400 to 2695m above the sea level, the> Eravikulam National park near Munnar is a noble effort to save the traces of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr which is a wild goat found only towards the south of Himalayas. The park was recognized as a National park in the year 1978. The richness of the park encompassing the green valley of grasses is placed towards the western coast of the Munnar Forest Division of Idduki district in Kerala. The boundaries of the park lines from the border of Kerala and surpasses the frontiers of Tamil Nadu, sharing diversity in the unity of the extreme southern ends of India.

The vegetation of the park:

The Park is enveloped in the Sholas which stretch to the Anamudi peak which towers the high points in the southern part of Himalayas.

History of the National Park:

During the British reign, the North Travancore Land Planting Society owed the area of Eravikulam and Rajamalai which gradually came in the hands of Kannan Deven Hill Produce Corporation, which converted the whole area into a private hunting hub. Along with the passing time, Eravikulam wildlife Sanctuary was declared as a National Park in the year 1978.

Significance of the Park:

The Park holds the attention and appreciation of the visitors from nation and abroad by nurturing the extinct species in their natural habitat with fine facilities. The motto of the Park is to flourish the population of these endangered species by providing ideal climate and surroundings for their reproduction and facilitation.

Species found in the Park:
  • The park nourishes and protects the species of Nilgiri Tahr which is biologically named as Hemitragus hylocrius. The toils of the workers of this Park have made it possible for the tourists to see 600 Nilgiri Tahr.
  • The park also houses: Gaurs, Nilgiri Langur, Elephants, Sambhars, Lion-tailed Macaque, Tigers and Leopards.

The National Park also protects the world's largest moth: Atlas Moth.

Climate:
  • Minimum temperature: 8 degree C
  • Maximum temperature: 23 degree C.
Ideal months to visit the Park and Munnar: Between the months of November to March.

How to reach:

Airport: The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport which is 143 km from Munnar.

Train: The nearest railhead is Ernakulam which runs trains to all the major cities in India.

Road transport: The road drops the traveler at the headquarters of the Park. From this point, the remaining distance can be traveled on foot, which is 18 km.
