Murud is a beautiful place in Raigad district in Maharashtra state. Murud-Janjira is a very popular tourist spot in Maharashtra. It is the only spot in Maharashtra where you can see historic places, enjoy the sea and still visit the religious places.

What To See In Murud Janjira

The fort of Murud-Janjira is an important sea fort in the country. It is situated nearly 2 kms inside the Arabian sea. You have to reach there by a boat. The ride is very fun filled and you will thoroughly enjoy this place. The Janjira fort was built in the 15th century by the rulers of Ahmednadar. This fort is nearly 300 years old but is still strong enough to face the sea waves lashing it. There are some very important historic places inside the fort. There are some very ancient monuments in the Janjira fort. The tombs are very old and belong to the Janjira rulers. These tombs are believed to be very old and are at present under the protection of the Archeological survey of India. These tombs are 500 years old and have inscriptions on it. The monuments are of Indo-Saracenic style and are restored by the Archeological Survey of India. There are some very ancient guns in the fort. These guns are named as Kalal Bangadi, Chavari and Landa Kadam and are very famous. There are 2 huge water tanks in the fort surrounded by the sea. The tanks have sweet water in it and it is a miracle in itself.

There is Victoria water works at Gambhari nearly 8 kms from Murud. Sawat Kada water falls nearby are best to visit after the monsoon rains. The most visited place nearby is the Birla mandir and Siddhi Vinayak mandir. These are sea facing and are a tourist delight in the area. Also, there is one more fort in the area, Padmadurg. This fort was built by Shivaji Maharaj to strengthen his hold over the sea.

The Phansad wildlife sanctuary near Nandgaon that is just 20 kms from Murud. You can visit the sanctuary and enjoy the wild and dense forest. If you are lucky enough, you can even spot some wild life there on your visit. There are some interesting spots like the Nandgaon Ganpati temple. A large fair is held every year in honor of this Ganpati. Other tourist places in Murud Janjira are the beautiful and nude beaches of Nandgaon and Kashid. These beaches are less frequented and a perfect haven for you if you are seeking solitude with comfort. The beaches have white sand and are very clean and it is well worth visiting the place just to lie in the seawaters.

There are some caves called as Kude caves. These caves are Buddhist caves and about 28 kms away from Murud. These caves are 2000 years old and date back to the 1st century. There are Sanskrit inscriptions in the caves, some have Buddhist stupas while others have basic figurines and carvings.

The best part of the trip to Murud-Janjira is the seafood. This place is a Haven for seafood lovers. You get absolutely fresh seafood cooked in Malvani style. The pomfret, surmai, lobsters, crabs and prawns are worth a try. You can even enjoy local seasonal fruits like coconut, jackfruits, mangoes, Kokum etc.
