Nagapattinam is a city in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is an administrative headquarters to the Nagapattinam district. Formerly the city was known as Negapatam. However, city is an ancient Buddhist center. With the support of Raja Chola and Shri Vijaya King, Chudamani Vihara was built here. Until the 15th century, Buddhism flourished in Nagapattinam. The other names of Nagapattinam are Naganadu and Cholakula Vallippatinam. The early Portuguese ruler referred Nagapattinam as the city of Coromandel. In 1657, the Dutch occupied the Nagapattinam town from the Portuguese. In the year 1657, the Maratha Prince Venkaji conquered it. Again, in the year 1781 British Raj conquered it. The major languages that are spoken in the Nagapattinam district are Tamil and Telugu. The majority of population found here are of Hindu religion with a minority of Muslims, Christian, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists.
