Location and History:
The Sanctuary is located 65km from Ooty on the Ooty-Mysore road. Set in the year 1932 in an area of 321 Sq Km by the government of Tamil Nadu, the Sanctuary is a beautiful picture of landscape, swamps, parklands, streams, brooks and lush green plants. The lovers of nature, wildlife enthusiasts and research scholars are the major portion of its tourist bundle.

The Sanctuary is proud to conserve the species of Elephant, Maraque, Common Langur, Gaur, Bonnet, Chital, Tigers, Panther, leopards, Sloth, Bear, Barking Dear, Python, Otter, Four Horned Antilope, Crocodole, Sambhar, Wild Dog, Hyena, Wild Boar, Spotted Dear, Jackal, Mouse Dear, Hare, Mongoose and Procupine.

Species of Avifauna:
The exploration of the park is an endless chase for the variety of birds preserved from the harsh environment of the free world. The color of the Sanctuary is stained with blue Peacock, Gray Jungle Fowl, Rachet tailed dronge, Malabar whistling thrush, Spotted babbler, Magpie robbin, Green pigions, Green barbet, Malabar grey hornbill, Brown dove, Mynahs and Bulbul. The changing color in the spectrum of Nilgiri changes with the number and type of birds' spotted in the dampness of the woods bordered with the Sanctuary.
Flora:
The type and species of forest encompassed in the area of Mudumalai is a cluster of tropical moist deciduous, tropical dry deciduous and southern tropical thorns. The high rainfall zones bears mixed vegetation amidst tropical moist deciduous.
