Pandharpur is a very popular town in Solapur district. It is one of the most revered pilgrimage centers in Maharashtra. This temple town is located on the banks of river Bhima. The river bank has a semicircular curve here; hence the river is also called as Chandrabhaga. Chandrabhaga literally means, moon like crescentric bank. Pandharpur is called as "Southern Kashi of India" as it is a place where lord Vitthal resides.

Vitthal and Rukmini are the Kuldevats (important local Deities) of the state of Maharashtra. He is regarded as the supreme god and an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Shiva. The name Vitthal is derived from the word Vishnu in Kannada language. The lord is also popularly known as Pandarung which is derived from sanskritization of Pandarga, which was the old name of Pandharpur.

Pundlika was a very popular saint from this place. There is a special shrine dedicated to him. You can listen to interesting legends regarding Pundlika on your visit to the Pandharpur temple.

This temple town becomes alive in the month of July, when there is Ashadi Ekadashi fair. Lakhs of devotees throng this shrine to seek blessings of lord Vitthal. Since, Pandharpur s a very important and popular religious place, many people visit it. This place has very good transportation facilities.

You can also visit Solapur and Tuljapur on your visit to Pandharpur. Both the places are very famous tourist destinations and are very near to Pandharpur.

By Air :The nearest airport to Pandharpur is the Pune airport. Once you reach Pune, you can take a bus or a private vehicle further to reach Pandharpur. There is also an airport at Solapur which has flights from all the important cities in the country on weekly basis.

By Rail :Pandharpur lies on the Miraj-Kurdawadi-Latur rack of railways. It is more convenient to reach Solapur by train and then travel further as Solapur is very well connected by railways.

By Road :You can travel to Pandharpur from Solapur, Pune and other places. It is well connected to all the major cities and towns by a good network of roads. There are state transport buses exclusively for this place from every nook and corner from Maharashtra.
