Harshat Mata Temple

Harshat Mata is considered the goddess of joy and happiness. She is believed to be cheerful always and imparts her joy and happiness to the whole village. The temple is worth visiting as it is extremely beautiful. The temple has amazing architecture and it belongs to the medieval period. The village is called as Abhaneri due to Harshat Mata. Abha means brightness, and this goddess is said to spread joy and brightness all over the place.

The temple is located in the village Abhaneri near Jaipur. Raja Chand is credited with laying the foundation of this place. Many historians believe that Raja Chand is the mythological representation of Raja Bhoj, who ruled the Gurjar kingdom during the 9th century. The ruins of the temple support the belief with the 10th century architectural and sculptural styles.

The Harshat Mata temple is one of the best examples of early medieval architecture in Rajasthan. The temple dates back to the 10th century and is at present under the protection of the Archeological department of the Government of India. The ruins of the temple and pieces of sculptures and the carved pillars show a fine degree of craftsmanship. The locals worship the goddess daily and people all over come here to seek blessings. An annual fair is held here in honor of Harshad Mata, which lasts for three days. Devotees from all over come here to attend it. The place is almost razed now but has still retained its importance. The temple of Harshat Mata is a tourist attraction along with the Chand Baori, a step well.

Chand Baroi is the world’s biggest and deepest step well. It is an amazing sight to look at the well. The well has a depth of 100 feet and measures 35 m on each side. This square well has 3500 steps and is 13 storied. Each platform is connected by two sets of steps. These have perfect symmetry and are a delight to see. The walls of Chand Baori have some beautiful and delicate carvings. This step well, Chand Baori is amazing and it is a wonder to imagine it build during the 9th century.
