What to see at Corbett National Park
Corbett has appropriately been portrayed as the land of the roar, trumpet and song. It signifies a vista of incredible splendor. The park was initially set up as a Tiger reserve. The rich biodiversity of the reserve is partly attributed to the diversity of habitat found here. Due to the location of the reserve in the foothills of the central Himalayas both Himalayan and peninsular flora and fauna is found in the reserve. The trees cover almost 73% of the park, 10% of the area consists of grasslands. It houses around 110 tree species, 50 species of mammals, 580 bird species and 25 reptile species. Flora :The different habitat types of Corbett i.e. mountains, sal forests, chaurs, khair-sisso forests and rivers have their distinct assemblage of plants. More than 600 species of trees, shrubs, herbs, bamboos, grasses, climbers and ferns have been recorded in the park.
Fauna : Over 585 species of resident and migratory birds, 33 species of reptiles, 7 species of amphibians, 7 species of fish and 37 species of dragonflies have been recorded.
Bengal tigers, buffalo, elephants, boars, leopards etc. can also be spotted in the jungle. Smaller felines in the park include jungle cat, fishing cat and leopard cat. Other mammals include deer, sloth, black bears, mongoose, otters and monkeys.
Among the birds which can be spotted are parakeets, owls, orioles, thrushes, babblers, bulbuls, cuckoos, doves, bee eaters, warblers, robin, finches, Forktail, hornbills, kingfishers and many more.
Other Attractions :
- Garjia Temple : 14 kms from Ramnagar, on the way to Ranikhet, is a huge rock in the midst of River Kosi. The temple is dedicated to Garjia Devi. People from all over the state throng the temple on the occasion of large fair being held here on Kartik Poornima.
- Dhikala : A very popular tourist destination, Dhikala is situated at the edge of the broad Patli Dun valley. The place offers a magnificent panoramic view of the valley, with Kanda ridge in the backdrop.
- Ranikhet : A beautiful hill station located in the Almora district of Uttaranchal, the place receives heavy snowfall from Dec to Feb.
- Elephant Safari : Elephant safari is one of the major attractions of Corbett National park. Sitting on an elephant one goes into the grasslands and jungles looking for tigers & other animals.
- Kalagarh Dam : This dam is located in the south west direction of the Jim Corbett wildlife sanctuary. This is one of the best places for the bird watching tour. Migratory waterfowl comes here in winter.
- Trekking : Trekking is not allowed inside the park but tourists are allowed to go for trekking around the park but with a guide.
- Corbett Wildlife Museum : Corbett museum is situated at Dhangarhi where you will see the belongings and life history of Jim Corbett still intact at the museum with some of the animals at Corbett national park.
- Fishing Safari : Sustainable angling, as opposed to intensive fishing, benefits conservation of fishes like mahseer. Angling is allowed in certain areas in the buffer region after taking permit from the forest department.
