Viratnagar or Bairat was once a capital of the legendary Matsayadesh. It is located near Jaipur in Rajasthan state and has reference in the Mahabharata. It is one of the forgotten sites in Rajasthan and has a lot of historical importance as it has some sites that date back to the 1st and 3rd centuries.

Viratnagar is situated on the Jaipur-Alwar state highway and is in the vicinity of important and recognized tourist destinations such as Sariska, Ajabgarh and Alwar. There are very important historical venues in good state that are not highlighted and can be explored. It will be a welcome break to visit these sites, for the tourist's already traveling on this circuit.
The city of Viratnagar was founded by king virat in whose kingdom the pandavas spend their exile in disguise. There is a place called as Bhim ki Dungari or Pandu's hill where there is a large cave. This was supposed to be the abode of Bhim and several other small rooms were occupied by his brothers. There is also Kichaks palace in this area. Parleys were conducted in viratnagar to avoid the war of Mahabharata. The king of Viratnagar, played a important role in the peace parleys which eventually failed and lead to the most famous and destructive war of the Mahabharata.
Beejak ki pahari is a wonderful site which has remnants of a Buddhist Monastery dating back to the 1st and 3rd century AD. This place also has some very important Ashokan inscriptions and the beautiful Jain temple tells you about the antiquity at this place. The inscriptions on the ruins indicate that king Ashoka built the monasteries.
Ganesh Giri temple and the museum have scenic beauty. The museum has about 170 articles of great archaeological importance. Jain nasiya has beautiful irrigation and water flow system and a small garden with children's playground. The Jain temple has an oblong open courtyard surrounded by high walls and has beautifully carved pillared porticos at the entrance.
Mughal gate is a historical monument and is supposed to be a small replica of the Taj Mahal. There are some beautiful frescoes on the walls and the building is in good cond90ition.
