What makes the city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh famous? Is it the Taj Mahal or the Petha (sweetmeat)? The argument is an interesting one but whatever might be the reason for its fame, Agra is a perfect choice for a memorable holiday. Agra is definitely an ancient city since its origins can be traced back to the times of the Mahabharata. As far as its name is concerned history puts forward various theories. To some, it derived its name from the forest named Agrabana while many state that it came to be called Agra under the rule of the Marathas and the Jats. However, the city born under the reign of Sikander Lodi in 1504, Agra rose in prominence only under the rule of the Mughals. A period of cultural development soon followed and Agra witnessed the birth of some of the magnificent buildings and gardens during this time which consisted of the Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Jama Masjid, Ram Bagh to name a few.

Bounded by Mathura on the north, Dhaulpur on the south, Firozabad on the East and Bharatpur on the west, Agra is counted as the third biggest city in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

With the river Yamuna flowing by, Agra is also hailed as a city of festivities. A number of cattle fairs, religious and social fairs and festivals with their customs and colors make it a colorful affair. Some of the worth mentioning one’s are the Janmashtami, Dussehra, Taj Mahotsav, Rambarat, Kailash Fair and the Bateshwar Cattle Fair. The city can be hailed as a Shopper’s Paradise too. Tourists can check out some of the big places like Sanjay Place and Sadar Bazaar or take back costly souvenirs at cheap price from the markets of Raja Mandi, Kinari Bazaar, Lohamandi and Fuhaara.

With the summer and winter temperatures going extreme, the best time to visit the city are from mid January to April or in the months of September to mid December.
