What to See in Agra
Agra, the city with a long history in its background is situated on the banks of the beautiful river Yamuna in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Easy to reach and with plenty of accommodation opportunities readily available, the city of Agra has been an all time favorite of tourists from all over the country and world alike. It is well known primarily because of the eternal symbol of love, Taj Mahal and a number of historic monuments and beautiful gardens. The Taj Mahal built by Shah Jahan in the loving memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, is the first among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the other two being Fatehpur Sikri and the Agra Fort. This trio makes Agra the pride of any Indian national. The land once ruled by the royal Mughals, Marathas and the Jats was born under the hands of Sultan Sikander Lodi in the year 1504.Even if ruled by different hands, Agra witnessed a period of glory under the deft hands of the Mughals. The city was gifted some of the prominent capitals like Shahjahanabad and Akbarabad, historical monuments and lovely landscaped gardens during their rule. Fatehpur Sikri, the city made out of stone by Emperor Akbar, came to serve as a military camp.
The other notable places of tourist importance consist of the Jama Masjid, Mehtab Bagh, Ram Bagh, Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb, Chini Ka Rauza, Soami Bagh Samadh, Tomb of Akbar also known as Sikandra and the Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chisti.
