Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Dargah in Ajmer is a place of worship that holds lot of importance for Muslims as well as Hindus. Dargah is the tomb of Khawaza Moinuddin who was a Sufi Saint much revered in Islamic community. Hundreds of devotees come to pray everyday at the tomb.

Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti was a Muslim saint who belonged to Persia. He came to India for preaching Islam. Hazrat Khwaja acquired religious training from Samarkand and Bukhara, known centres for religious training and education. After the death of his parents he renounced his worldly possessions and became a saint for the cause of poor and helpless.
Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti arrived in India around 587 AD. Then he was 52 years old. Before coming to Ajmer he also met great Muslim leaders in Delhi and other parts of India. When he arrived in Ajmer the city was ruled by Prithvi Raj Chauhan.
He set up his small house on the top of a hillock. People were gradually attracted to his teachings which were simple and divine. Devotees started trusting his spiritual powers and gradually became his follower. By showing the path of truth to people he became the revered prophet of Ajmer. Khwaja Moinuddin was also popularly known as Garib Nawaz. He especially worked for the betterment of poor and was thus known as the saint of the poor.
It is said that six days before his death Khwaja Moinuddin remained inside his room and kept praying and meditating. He was buried in the same cell which was the center of his divine activities till his death.

The final shape to the shrine was given by the Mughul ruler Humayun. The architecture of the tomb is Islamic in design. The main tomb is covered by silver railing and partly by marble screen.
The main dome of the tomb is made out of marble and has gold plated top. The Dargah is approached by several gates made of silver. A lot of modifications in the design of the shrine have been made by future rulers like Akbar and Jahangir. Once you enter the courtyard of the tomb you can see two huge cauldrons which were donated by the two rulers.
The shrine is always packed with devotes. Muslim Qawalee in the praise of Khwaja goes on in the courtyard of the shrine. The whole atmosphere inspires religious feelings and brings the visitors close to the God.
